OUR CRAFTING GROUND

Arrowtown is a historic gold mining town that sits at the foothills of the Southern Alps in Central Otago, it’s our crafting ground. Arrow River was discovered in the early 1800’s by prospectors looking for gold. When word got out that gold had been found in the river, miners flocked from near and far with the hope of discovering a gold nugget of their own. This rich mining history and sense of exploration is still strongly represented in Arrowtown today. It is also the home of both Rifters and Royalburn.

THE PROCESS

The production process of Rifters Royalburn Single Malt Whisky is a true labour of love, and it’s evident in the final product. The whisky is aged in premium Ex-bourbon barrels, which give the spirit a smooth and mellow character, with notes of vanilla and honey. The ageing process allows the whisky to take on the unique flavour profile of the oak barrels. With extreme temperatures of hot and cold in Arrowtown, it gets our whisky casks talking. By this, we mean expanding and contracting, the movement of wood helps deliver unique flavours to the spirit, creating a rich and complex whisky that is both smooth and robust.

RIFTERS

Rifters are makers of luxury spirits, an establishment co-founded by two builders Stu & Hamish. Over the last few years, a solid reputation has been built winning multiple awards in the likes of San Francisco, London and New Zealand for the exceptional spirits they have crafted. From the get-go, they set out to create premium products inspired by the land that surrounds them.

ROYALBURN STATION

At the edge of the Whakatipu basin sits Royalburn Station, currently run by Carlos Bagrie and Nadia Lim. Royalburn has been growing grain for 130 years, steeped in history when it comes to arable farming. Back in the 1800’s it was here that Henry Speight and William McKibbon sat in a shed and did a handshake on what was to become the malt for Speight’s, making Royalburn one of the original farms supplying grain to the Speight’s Factory. Fast forward over 130 years and it’s here our barley was grown, perched on the Crown Range exposed to the harshest of conditions. It’s these conditions that created a grain few can. Through exceptional farmmanship, Carlos and Nadia have crafted an outstanding barley variety.
